Object Name: Saong

Provenance: Bontok
Dog teeth
L 8 cm
MK Collection

This is used both as a head ornament and necklace. It is made of dog teeth; and both men and women could wear this ornament (Maramba, 1998). “It is usually composed of only the larger fangs of a canine, however, more common examples use long slender animal bones or ribs. Glass and/or ceramic beads enliven the composition” (Maramba, 1998: 54). Unmarried men and women are the ones who wear this among the Bontok of Mountain Province (Maramba, 1998: 39).
